QuickBooks not opening is a small-business emergency — your books, payroll, and invoicing depend on it. The problem usually has nothing to do with your data and everything to do with QuickBooks' install, the company file location, multi-user mode, or a Windows update interaction. A tech can diagnose and fix QuickBooks remotely without ever touching your data. Most cases close in 20-30 minutes. If you are running QuickBooks on a network for a multi-user setup, this is also a common moment to look at whether your IT setup needs a longer-term fix.

Real, useful steps to try before you book. If they do not resolve it, the next sections explain what is actually wrong and how a remote session fixes it.
Stuck QuickBooks processes from a previous session can prevent the next launch. Restart, then try opening QuickBooks fresh — not by double-clicking a recent company file.
Hold Ctrl while double-clicking the QuickBooks icon. This opens it to the No Company Open window. If it opens this way, the problem is the company file, not the program.
Download the official Tool Hub from intuit.com/download. Run "Quick Fix my Program" first, then "QuickBooks File Doctor" if needed. Intuit's own tools fix many launch problems automatically.
Right-click QuickBooks → Run as administrator. Some Windows updates change permissions in ways that block QuickBooks until it is launched elevated.
QuickBooks-won't-open issues come from: a corrupted QuickBooks installation (Windows update interaction, antivirus quarantine, or partial uninstall), a damaged company file (the .qbw — usually fixable with File Doctor), missing or damaged Microsoft .NET / MSXML / Visual C++ runtimes that QuickBooks depends on, multi-user mode database server (QBDBMgrN) not running, an active connection from another PC blocking single-user mode, conflicting third-party add-ons, antivirus / endpoint protection blocking QuickBooks because of a recent definition update, network shares that became unavailable (for company files on a NAS), or QuickBooks edition / version mismatches across users in a multi-user setup. Specific error codes (H202, 6000-77, 6189-816, etc.) each have known causes and known fixes — we use the error code as the entry point. The biggest mistake users make is moving or copying a .qbw file while another user has it open, which corrupts both the file and the network database.
Your tech connects through CyberDesk and triages QuickBooks correctly: identify the exact error or hang point, run the official Tool Hub fixes, repair the QuickBooks installation if needed, restore the dependencies QuickBooks relies on (.NET, MSXML, Visual C++), check the Windows hosts file and firewall for blocks, verify the company file integrity safely (read-only first), and for multi-user setups verify the database server and network shares are healthy. We never touch your company file destructively — every fix is reversible. We also flag any Windows / network configuration that is set up in a way QuickBooks does not like long-term, so you can decide whether to address it.

We do not need access to your QuickBooks data to fix the launch issue. We work on the QuickBooks software and its environment, not your books. Multi-user QuickBooks setups are a common reason businesses move from break-fix support to managed IT — we can have that conversation if it is relevant, but we never push it.
H202 means QuickBooks could not establish a multi-user database connection. The fix involves checking that QBDBMgrN service is running on the host, the network share is reachable, and the firewall is not blocking ports 8019, 56728, 55378-55382. We can fix it in a session.
Often, yes. QuickBooks does not love NAS-hosted company files. Best practice is to host the file on a Windows machine running QuickBooks Database Server Manager, then access from clients. We can audit and recommend.
No. The data lives in your .qbw file, which we never modify destructively. Even when we use File Doctor, it works on a copy. If we ever recommend a deeper repair, we back up the file first and explain exactly what we are doing.
Different beast — QBO is a web app, so "won't open" usually means a browser issue, an Intuit auth problem, or a blocked extension. Same $79 session, slightly different fix path.
It depends on your workflow. We can talk through the trade-offs with you, but we do not push specific Intuit products — we are vendor-neutral.
